BMW Bumper Thefts (18/7/2008)

Since January 2008 Haringey Police have received 33 reports of the theft of Bumpers from 3 or 5 Series BMWs. Of those 33 reports, 22 were reported between 01/06/08 and 14/07/08 and the majority of offences took place in Stroud Green and Crouch End wards.

Offences have seen high value front and / or rear bumpers taken. The high cost of the bumpers is due to the fact they contain the lighting housing. The thefts have taken place while the vehicle has been left secure and unattended either overnight or for a number of days, parked on a driveway or on the street.

If you have a 3 series or 5 series BMW seek out crime prevention advice from your local BMW garage. Detective Sergeant Jason Turkington of Haringey's dedicated Motor Vehicle Team is concerned that 3 and 5 Series BMW owners are not aware of the relatively low cost crime prevention modification that is being offered by some local BMW dealers to make it more difficult to steal the bumpers. He said: "While on the whole vehicle crime is down, this type of theft has risen dramatically in the past two months. Intelligence led patrols are taking place in hotspot areas in response to the current rise in thefts from vehicles. We are targeting known offenders and carrying out decoy operations to catch thieves, who should watch out because the car they're about to steal from could be a police decoy."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Motor Vehicle Team on 020 8345 0893 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
