Broadwater Farm Estate Is No Safe Haven For Criminals.

Operation Horde

Police carried out raids in N17 on 25th September, following intelligence to suggest the sale of illegal drugs, money laundering and the handling of stolen goods.

The operation, titled Operation Horde, was designed to tackle drug dealing offences and associated criminality on the Broadwater Farm Estate and demonstrates the Met’s commitment to the local community on the estate and the surrounding areas.

Officers from Haringey, working closely with their Met colleagues from the Territorial Support Group (TSG), Dog Unit and the Traffic Unit, conducted the raids at approx 4.45 p.m. at two business addresses on the Broadwater Farm Estate. Search warrants were obtained under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Police arrested three men and seized a quantity of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and three knives.

A woman was issued with a warning for possession of cannabis.

Officers walked around the estate, leafleting and talking to residents to offer reassurance around the high visibility police activity.

The operation was watched by two independent Community Observers, activist Bill Guy and Pastor David Daniel, who accompanied the Community Engagement Team in order to observe police actions and talk to local residents.

Bill Guy, well known activist and community worker, who was present as a Community Observer said:
"I was there as a Community Observer to see that there was fair cooperation between the community and the police."
"Residents were happy to see Community Observers there and the feedback I received from the locals was that most of the community were in support of what the police were doing."

Clasford Sterling MBE, Youth & Sports Development Officer for London Borough of Haringey, said:
"Anything that is going to bring the estate to normal running is supported."
"It's long term results that we are looking at."
"We're working in an era of togetherness, working hand in hand and we will not condone drug dealing in any way and will work with the police to eradicate it and that's the general feeling of the community."

Superintendent Wayne Mawson, Haringey Borough, in charge of the operation, said:
"We have the support of the wider community in this area, who have raised their concerns to police about the criminal activity of a small minority of people."

"This is part of a long term strategy to ensure that those intent on criminality do not gravitate towards the area, and we hope that this action will continue to offer reassurance to the community."

"Criminals will find no safe haven in Haringey and police will continue to work with the council, our partners and people from every community from every ward on our borough, so that together we can make Haringey safer for everyone."

"You can help us to find the right people and bring them to justice, so they can no longer have a negative impact on your community."
